Saturday Science Academy
Team Science will host two Saturday Science Academy (SSA) events at schools within the Whittier Union High School District and two at West Covina High School. Each SSA will consist of up to 5 workshops for approximately 20 students or teachers each. Dates will be coordinated at a later time.
Team Science utilizes a computer based math enrichment tool called ALEKS. ALEKS is available in both English and Spanish and addresses 4th grade Math through Calculus for a cost of $20 a month.
· ALEKS uses an adaptive questioning protocol to quickly and accurately determine the areas of strength and weakness for the student.. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he or she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will likely be successful in the classroom in that topic area. If there is a measurable level of success for within the student population participating in math enrichment grants will likely be sought for enhancing this critical area of academia as an after school program
· Adventures in Math and Physics (AMP) uses a full scale-working model of the Space Shuttle Flight Deck (SFDS). It is used to motivate students and demonstrate the importance of learning higher-level mathematics. Students and teachers attend an after school workshop to apply, practice, and improve math and physics skills to solve real world problems in the area of aircraft, rockets, and space flight.
· Shuttle Flight Deck Simulator
· The simulator will be used during Summer Science Camp as well as Saturday Science Academy events and as a learning and motivational learning tool to demonstrate the importance of learning higher-level math.
Educator Enrichment (E2) the overarching aim of our E2strategy is simple and straightforward: teach to inspire! Therefore, our instructors are primarily professionals in the science industry. Moreover our workshops are formatted to yield exciting and innovative ways to approach math, science, and technology with students many of whom have limited familiarity with the fields or unwarranted beliefs they cannot excel in them!
